Latin
At our school, we are proud to teach Latin as our primary language at Key Stage 2. We choose Latin not as a relic of the past, but as a deliberate and powerful tool to boost our pupils' literacy, grammar, and critical thinking. Because over 60% of English words have Latin roots, learning this language gives children a "linguistic skeleton key" to decode complex vocabulary across science, history, and geography.
As a highly structured language, Latin sharpens our pupils' understanding of English grammar and provides an ideal structural blueprint for learning modern languages—like French or Spanish—at secondary school. Furthermore, because it focuses on reading and decoding rather than complex spoken pronunciation, Latin creates an equitable leveling playing field where pupils of all abilities can thrive and build rapid confidence. Ultimately, it connects our children to our rich historical heritage while equipping them with the transferable skills needed for future academic success.
