Welcome To Our Maths Page:

In our school, we want all of our children to be fluent in Maths with the ability to reason and problem solve.

Our approach to teaching maths is CPA – children begin with Concrete resources, move onto Pictorial representations before tackling concepts in the Abstract. This approach is used for all year groups when moving onto a new unit. Some children will spend longer on the Concrete resources, some on Pictorial and some will quickly move onto the Abstract.

We use Complete Maths as guidance when planning maths as it breaks down the units into carefully sequenced small steps. Teachers are constantly assessing the children’s knowledge. Before starting a unit, the children complete a prerequisite knowledge quiz. This informs teachers’ planning to ensure the children have the prior knowledge which they require. At the end of a unit, the children complete a post-teaching quiz which informs teachers about whether they need to cover any concepts in more detail. Teachers constantly assess the children within each lesson, and formally assess termly.

We want all of our children to have the opportunity to become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, including through varied and frequent practice, to develop their recall of maths facts to support them taking on the challenge of more complex problems.

Alongside Complete Maths, we use Tackling Tables and Tackling Add/Subtract to support children in rapidly and accurately recalling number facts. Children begin with Add/Subtract in Year 1 and Tables in Year 2, once multiplication and division have been taught. We also ensure that in KS2 the children complete weekly arithmetic lessons. This ensures the children are constantly rehearsing their arithmetic skills to ensure they have a secure knowledge and fast recall.
